Mijn onderzoeksinteresse gaat uit naar de vraag “waarom mensen doen wat ze doen?”. Wat drijft een student om zich goed in te spannen voor school? Wat beweegt een kind om de regels van zijn ouders al dan niet na te leven? Waarom beslist een patiënt om een therapie te blijven volgen of om er uit te stappen? Wat zorgt ervoor dat een werkzoekende gaat solliciteren? Waarom sorteren we ons afval en doen we iets voor het milieu?
Dit zijn allemaal motivationele vraagstukken. Doorheen mijn onderzoekswerk probeer ik de motieven van ons gedrag en de soorten doelen en ambities die we nastreven in kaart te brengen. Een belangrijke vraag die dan ook rijst is of bepaalde motieven en doelen beter zijn dan andere. Zullen bepaalde motieven en doelen gepaard gaan met meer volharding, het leveren van betere prestaties, meer persoonlijk welbevinden (bvb., minder depressie), een vlottere identiteitsontwikkeling, en meer sociaal aangepast functioneren (bvb., minder vooroordeel), terwijl andere deze uitkomsten negatief beïnvloeden? Daarnaast probeer ik na te gaan hoe de sociale omgeving, zoals ouders, leerkrachten, coaches, en therapeuten, op deze motivatie kan inspelen.
Dit onderzoek kan voor de praktijk interessant zijn, omdat het aangeeft hoe scholen, bedrijven, klinische settings, en de samenleving in haar geheel kan georganiseerd worden zodat iedereen optimaal gemotiveerd wordt. Uiteindelijk vervult ieder van ons tot op zekere hoogte de rol van motivatiepsycholoog, omdat we de mensen rondom ons proberen te stimuleren en enthousiasmeren. Doorheen mijn onderzoek probeer ik de zelf-determinatie theorie verder uit te bouwen (Deci & Ryan, 2000; Vansteenkiste, Ryan, & Deci, 2008), maar maak ik tevens gebruik van andere motivationele (bvb., prestatie doel theorie, waarde maal verwachtingstheorie), ontwikkelingspsychologische (bvb., separatie-individuatie theorie, sociale domein theorie), klinische (bvb., motivationeel interviewen, transtheoretisch model van verandering) en arbeidspsychologische kaders (bvb., doelentheorie, belasting-hulpbronnen model). |

Omdat zowel het stellen als niet stellen van om het even welk gedrag gemotiveerd gedrag is, kan de vraag naar de motivationele drijfveer van een activiteit dan ook op alle levensdomeinen worden toegepast, variërend van school, werk(loosheid), medische en psychische hulpverlening, ecologie en opvoeding tot sport en beweging. Authoriteitsfiguren, zoals leerkrachten, ouders, psychotherapeuten, coaches en regeringsleiders kunnen tevens op de motivatie van mensen inspelen, ten goede en ten kwade. In interactieve spreekbeurten en workshops wordt de basisfilosofie van de zelf-determinatie theorie, een sterk empirisch onderbouwde theorie, uitgelegd. Hierbij wordt zowel aandacht geschonken aan de verschillende types motivatie die kunnen onderscheiden worden als aan de wijze waarop de omgeving op de motivatie kan inspelen. U kan mij per e-mail (
